I guess the people of Venice, Italy aren’t about to be snapping up Bulgari bags in an advertising-induced frenzy (or lion cubs, or naked Julianne Moores). The mayor of the legendary city has banned this billboard of the 49-year-old actress from the city’s epicentre, St. Mark’s Square.
“I take account of the fact that Venice is part of the real word…but we cannot accept these Hollywood-style images,” Mayor Giorgio Orsoni, who was elected last March, said (according to the Daily Telegraph). “There are intelligent sponsors, and we need to come up with advertising that suits Venice, not Times Square.” Oooh, let me say ouch for Times Square! And for Julianne Moore! This is a tasteful, artistic, retouched to the brink of recognition photo. It’s not like she’s going to head down to Times Square in a raincoat and flash tourists.
Julianne Moore will still preside over the historic Venetian square. Another ad where she’s fully-clothed and modelling jewellery will run in its place. People in Venice are extra-sensitive to nudie ads of Oscar-nominated actresses right now because the decision to advertise in the square is fairly recent. So really, this has more to do with politics than how appropriate it is to wear a lion cub as a top.
